The Government wishes to see a dramatic rise and sustained improvement in the performance of all providers of NHS services in both initiating clinical trials and delivering research.  The aim is to both increase the number of patients taking part in research and enhance the nation’s attractiveness as a host for research.

NHS providers holding NIHR contracts issued after autumn 2011 are required to provide, on a quarterly basis, information on recruitment to clinical trials, including commercial contract trials.

Two key areas are required to be submitted:

Initiating Clinical Research

Setting up research studies and recruiting the first patient. The focus is placed on transparency, accuracy and meeting sponsor expectations by reporting all delays which may affect or have affected agreed timelines.

NJRO Initiating Clinical Research Reports:

Delivering Clinical Research

Commercially sponsored trials.

The benchmark measures performance in recruiting the target number of patients in the agreed time.
