As a recognised leader in the research landscape, Newcastle Hospitals is committed to enabling our Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals (NMAHPs) to develop and lead innovative, world-class care and treatment, to improve prevention, diagnosis, and treatment outcomes for our people.

All year round, many of our Nurses, Midwives and AHPs are working hard, alongside their clinical practice to drive forward research for the benefit of our patients.

We have a dedicated NMAHP Research team here at Newcastle Hospitals, who support the growth of research and research careers.

4Ps Researcher Development Programme

The 4Ps Programme has been developed by Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals at Newcastle Hospitals to support your needs regardless of where you are on the “research interested” to “Aspiring Clinical Academic” continuum.

This is a welcoming, jargon-free modular programme. The four modules are Place, Project, Person, and Plan, and they provide you with the skills, knowledge and confidence to move forward with research. Underpinning all of this is an introductory session called Foundation.

The programme is delivered by a range of NMAHP clinical-academic colleagues, and with input from relevant organisations including the Research Support Service and Newcastle Health Research Partnership Academy.

4Ps bookings are managed by the Newcastle Clinical Skills Academy. You can find out more information and book your place here.

Researcher Development Institute

Our Researcher Development Institute (RDI) for Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals is an exciting initiative, backed by a £3.2million grant funded by Newcastle Hospitals Charity.
This funding, alongside ringfenced CPD funds, makes things easier – supporting programmes to help people like you become research leaders. It helps you develop, no matter what stage you are at on your research leadership journey, offering everything from pre- to post-doctoral support.
Importantly we will support you alongside your clinical career, as the fellowship programmes are designed intentionally to enable clinical and academic development in parallel – therefore all opportunities are part time.
To find out more about the RDI and current opportunities, go to our dedicated webpage.

Support and resources

We offer a range of other support and resources to help Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals make space for research. This includes one-to-one research support slots, where you can book a 30-minute Teams call with a member of our team, to have dedicated time and space to chat through a research idea and find out about available support. We also have an NMAHP Mentorship Directory, which features a range of colleagues with extensive research experience and knowledge who can be contacted for advice and guidance.
