Throughout the organisation we use systems in our everyday duties. In research there are several that support specific tasks, such as collecting recruitment data, submissions to Research & Development and document management. Each of these systems forms part of the Directorate’s Quality Management System (QMS) and staff should have an awareness of their functions. If you have access to any of the below systems as a user or read only, you should attend the training provided.

The Informatics Team, based within the NJRO manages several systems to make sure quality data and information is readily available to researchers, industry, universities and the wider NHS.

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has a dedicated Research Informatics Team working to build bridges between data and patient health. They can be contacted at nuth.research.informatics@nhs.net

LPMS/ReDA

The Local Portfolio Management System (LPMS) is used to manage both National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Portfolio studies and non-NIHR Portfolio studies. The system is also often referred to as ReDA.

The system is designed to allow research staff with different roles based at either The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust or Newcastle University to access, read and update any study that they are participating in.

This link will detail how to access and navigate LPMS/ReDA

You can find more information regarding training in the LPMS on our dedicated training page.

Q-Pulse

Q-Pulse provides the Newcastle Joint Research Office (NJRO) with an integrated approach to quality and safety, achieving the regulatory requirements associated with conducting Clinical Research.
The system utilises a series of interlinked software modules designed to assist with the information management of multiple functions, processes and quality activities across the NJRO. This gives greater oversight of internal processes and helps research to comply with standards and regulations while achieving high levels of quality and efficiency.
You can find further Q-Pulse resources on our dedicated training page.

REDCap

REDCap is a browser-based Electronic Case Report Form (eCRF) system, designed to capture research data from both research staff in medical settings and directly from patients via online tools. The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NuTH) REDCap is hosted on secure cloud servers held by ARO, an NHS certified cloud systems provider based in Liverpool, UK. The system is managed by the Newcastle Hospitals Research Informatics Team, who ensure that patient data is only accessible by authorised individuals and is appropriately anonymised for analysis.

REDCap is typically used to facilitate secure data capture and analysis for research projects including single and multi-site studies, but more advanced implementations include services such as randomisation, pre-screening and electronic consent. The Research Informatics Team can provide access to REDCap or build an entire research project within REDCap, with a costing model based on each individual project.

For more information about using REDCap for your project please visit our dedicated REDCap page, or contact the Research Informatics Team at nuth.research.informatics@nhs.net to discuss your requirements.
